Phillip Sarofim - Patience is a key skill in investment
Phillip Sarofim

“When we invest, it’s not just about capital – it’s about commitment. We dive in, offering our expertise and support to ensure each venture thrives. Our goal is to foster innovation that benefits both society and the planet, creating a better tomorrow for all.”

What aspect of your personality is most beneficial to you as an investor?

My patience. Success takes time. I focus on evaluating opportunities with a long-term outlook, allowing them time to establish firm foundations. Patience is a crucial element of this approach.

What are the key factors in the process of building a company?

Three factors stand out to me. First, clarity of vision. A well-defined purpose helps maintain focus and inform vital decisions. Second, prioritizing the company’s needs over personal ambitions. The best interests of the company might not always align with personal desires; however it is essential to put the business goals first. Third, determination and perseverance. The path will be challenging, and founders need the resilience to navigate obstacles.

What is the most crucial question every founder should ask a potential investor?

Founders should understand how an investor handles adverse situations. They should verify the investor’s response by speaking with other founders who have worked with them. At Trousdale Ventures, we recognize that setbacks are a natural part of building a business and we want founders to be prepared for them. When challenges arise, our approach is to engage quickly and provide thoughtful support. Typically, this collaborative effort leads us to a stronger position than before.

What inspired you to focus on mission-driven companies and forward-thinking investment practices at Trousdale Ventures?

My commitment stems from a deep-seated belief in creating a better future. I am inspired by the potential of great innovators to address the world’s most pressing challenges, from climate change to improving quality of life. At Trousdale, we invest in founders who share this vision. We seek out and support those dedicated to empowering and enhancing lives while benefiting the planet. This dual focus on technological advancement and positive societal growth drives everything we do.

How do you decide which sectors to invest in, given the diverse range of your portfolio?

Our choices are guided by a combination of current global needs, future potential, and alignment with our mission to foster innovation. We look for industries where our investment can create a significant impact. For example, our involvement with CesiumAstro and Venus Aerospace reflects our commitment to cutting-edge technologies. Similarly, our investments in wellness brands like Lemon Perfect and Super Coffee highlight our focus on improving everyday life.

Can you share a specific example of how you’ve actively shaped the trajectory of a venture?

A prime example is the revival of the Meyers Manx dune buggy brand. As the acting Chairman, I’ve been deeply involved in steering the brand towards a sustainable future. This includes leveraging my operational expertise and working closely with the team to innovate while preserving the brand’s iconic heritage. Another instance is my role at Coreshell, an advanced battery company where I hold a board position. I contribute to strategic decisions that enhance the company’s growth and technological advancements. In both cases, my hands-on approach helps ensure that our ventures not only succeed but also align with our overarching goal of innovation.
